Seasonal Plumbing Issues: What to Watch For

There are a number of seasonal plumbing issues which it is useful for you to know about as some may cause problems. Here is a short list of some seasonal issues which you may come across.

Water Quality

Sometimes water quality changes over the seasons. While the quality of your water will be published regularly by your jurisdiction, be aware that, for example, during spring run-off, there may be more dissolved solids or the even the colour might change slightly for a few weeks. This is not your fault, and there is nothing you can do about it other than include a water filter, if it is bothering you.

During periods of heavy rain sometimes you may even hear about a boil-water advisory because of flooding. Again, this is not the fault of the homeowner, but something to be aware of.

Winter Freezes

When the weather is below freezing or balances above and below freezing, that is when we can have problems with frozen exterior water taps. Be sure to disengage any hoses from the house before it freezes. If you have an underground sprinkler system, typically these need to be blown out with compressed air before winter so that the lines are not filled with water when the temperature is below zero.

This is the time of year when you can get something called an ice dam under your eaves, which can cause a leave and also do structural damage. Just be aware that when the temperature rises and falls, and there has been lots of rain and snow, look at your eaves and make sure there is not a collection of snow and ice where it should not be.

We urge you to let professionals—like us--diagnose and fix your leaks before you have a major problem. If you need some help with winter plumbing issues, give us a call at the number below.
