Long-Term Damage From Wet Basements

The long-term damage from a wet basement is hard to quantify. The damage can range from nothing to devastating depending on how wet we are talking about. In today’s blog article, we want to give you an idea of what the damage can include.

Flooring

If water is pooling on the floor, you can destroy your flooring. Water in the basement can lift and buckle flooring making it impossible to repair with the only option being to replace it all.

Walls

Water can also be wicked up into the drywall covering the walls damaging the insulation in exterior walls in the process. Again, this kind of damage means replacing drywall and insulation.

Furniture

Furniture or built-ins can also wick up moisture and destroy them. Even if you allow furniture to dry out, it may be warped and misshapen.

Mold

Once walls, floors, or furniture has had water damage, all of those areas are ripe for the spread of mold. Mold can grow silently behind drywall or floors for years, eating up wood joists and studs. In addition, once you had mold, you can have mold spores in the air, seriously affecting air quality. Poor air quality can have a devastating effect on those with allergies or who are immune compromised, not to mention the effect on normal people.

If you have water in your basement, get it looked at by professionals as soon as possible to prevent further damage and rectify the damage you already have. Water damage is no joke and can make a home uninhabitable.
