How to Minimize Water Damage While Waiting for Your Plumber

We all know how devastating the effects of a water leak can be and how much damage can be inflicted on your home. If you have a call out to your plumber and are waiting for him or her to arrive, there are a few things that you can do to limit the damage. In today’s blog article, we are going to give you some tips on what to do if you find yourself in this predicament.

Main Water Line

Assuming that your water leak is coming from inside your house, as opposed to coming from outside forces, the first thing to do is shut off the main water valve where it enters your house. We all have a main water line somewhere in the house, usually in the basement if you have a basement. There is always a valve there, and it is super important that you know where this valve is and how to shut it off in case of emergency.

Keep in mind that if you shut off this valve, your toilets will only get one flush because water will not fill up again in the tank. Also, you will not be able to get any water from the taps. So, think about it for a minute before shutting off this valve. You may want to fill a pitcher or two with water before you close the valve.

Moving Items

If a floor is getting wet and you can possibly move any furniture from the floor, then do so. If you are able to catch any water in a receptacle, then try that. Unfortunately, any furniture on a wet floor or within reach of splash can be damaged, so if you can avoid or minimize that damage until a plumber can get there, it is worth the effort.

As soon as your plumber arrives, he or she will be able to give you further advice about mitigating damage.
