How Do Leaks Typically Start?

There are many different types of leaks, and they start in all kinds of ways. That said, however, most leaks start from the ageing and wear and tear of building materials or the incorrect building, construction, or use of these building materials. In today’s blog article, we are going to talk about these types of leaks and how they start.

Wear and Tear of Building Materials

Examples of these types of leaks are the old roof that leaks because the asphalt shingles are worn and curled, and no longer lying the way they should. Another example would be 30-year-old PolyB pipe that has long outlived its service life, known to be around 10 years. A third example is old copper pipes that have corroded over time due to the water quality in the Vancouver area.

When these types of materials fail, they can become a plumbing emergency that needs to be addressed immediately to limit the damage inside the house.

Incorrect Use of Materials

Examples of these types of leaks are water inside the basement or crawl space because the drainage around the house and weeping tiles were not installed correctly, or the grading was not done correctly. Often the homeowner is unaware that there is a problem until it is too late and leak repair is needed. Another example could be pipe joints that were not soldered right or the compression fittings were not correct.

Cases like this often leads to a water or plumbing emergency, so leak detection professionals are a must. Often the homeowner has no idea who to call. If you are in this situation, call us on the Lower Mainland at (604) 349-5325.
