First Mistakes Homeowners Make After a Leak and What You Should Do Instead

Homeowners often make mistakes when they discover a leak. The types of mistakes they make vary depending on the type of leak they find. In today’s blog article we are going to give you some tips on how to avoid some of these typical mistakes.

Event:

There is an obvious leak with water cascading down walls or across floors, but it is not raining outside and has not rained for days. So, you know the water is coming from the inside.

Mistake:

Many homeowners have no idea what they should do. They start by grabbing towels to try to staunch the flow and limit the spread.

What You Should Do:

If it is clear that water is leaking from the inside of the house and is a plumbing issue, the first thing to do is shut off the main water valve that supplies all the water to the house. This is typically found next to the water heater and/or furnace. If you live in a condo, or are in a commercial building, you may have to call the building manager to get that person to turn off the main water supply. The next thing you should do is call a professional in leak detection and repair like us in the Greater Vancouver Area. Our phone number is below.

Your call to your insurance people should be third after the first two actions.

Event:

You smell something musty in your basement or crawlspace which suggests mold or mildew.

Mistake:

When faced with this, homeowners typically ignore it. Or open a window to create a breeze or a draft. This does not address the problem which is likely getting worse every minute.

What You Should Do:

Call leak detection specialists, like us, as soon as possible to trace the source of your humidity and mold. Ignoring mold and mildew and water damage can have devastating consequences. Your air quality can be compromised, and mold can destroy wood joists and beams. Never ignore a problem like this and think it will go away by itself. It never does.

These simple tips will save you a lot of time, money, and headache in the long run. And if you need help, call us, on the Lower Mainland.
