Is There Rapid Water Pipe Corrosion in Vancouver?
Yes, the short answer is that there is rapid water pipe corrosion in Vancouver and on the Lower Mainland. In this blog we will discuss what water pipe corrosion is, and what can be done about it.
What is water pipe corrosion?
Water pipe corrosion occurs when metal pipes undergo a chemical reaction with the water flowing through them which eats away at the pipe and causes a buildup which eventually blocks the pipe. Pipes are weakened through this process and often break down and spring leaks at the same time that blockages are building inside the pipe.
Why does this happen?
Metal pipes corrode because of several factors. First, oxygen in the water causes oxidation with the metal in the pipe. So, basically, microscopic metal parts break off of the pipe and form new compounds with the oxygen in the water. The drinking water on the Lower Mainland is very high in oxygen. In fact, it is just about saturated with oxygen.
Other factors include the pH of the water. The higher the pH, the faster this chemical process happens. Local government is actually trying to lower the pH slightly to slow this pipe corrosion. The soil quality, and stray electricity in the ground also contribute to the corrosion.
