How Do I Check My Shingle Roof for Leaks?

Whether you’re looking to find a specific problem or just doing a routine check-up, it’s good to know the most efficient way to find leaks in your shingle roof. This involves a bit of timing (or a hose), a flashlight, and access to the space directly underneath your roof.

Good Rainy Day Activity

It’s easier to find evidence of a leak than it is to find the leak itself. If you’re able to afford the wait, it’s best to save this task for a rainy day so that you can spot the water as it enters the house. If there are no rainy days on the horizon, it is also possible to use a garden hose to achieve the same effect, but this can take a while and uses much water.

If your area is already experiencing dry conditions, it’s best not to take this route.

Head to the Attic

Most attics don’t have lighting, so bring along the flashlight both to help you navigate the darkness and to spot any water. The light will reflect off any water droplets, and that telltale glint is often the first noticeable sign of a leak. Rotting wood, mould, and wet insulation are the other indicators.

Find the Hole

Water can travel some distance from the site of the original leak; it can run downhill along rafters or disperse into the insulation. Having found the indication of a problem, your next step is to follow the trail and determine precisely where the water entered.

Once you have found the hole, the choice is yours on the best way to proceed. Be forewarned that caulking is not a durable solution except only for the smallest holes. A proper do-it- yourself repair will typically involve installing a patch of flashing and replacing any damaged shingles.

Also, climbing around in the attic is not for everyone. It's easiest for young, small, and flexible individuals to creep around up there. Be careful to only stand on supporting beams or joists--or call professionals, like us.
