Because they are the lowest point of a home, and underground, basements attract unwanted water easily. Basement leaks are not just a nuisance; they pose major problems for cleanliness, structural integrity, and the health of residents. Here are some tips to keep your basement dry!

1. Keep Your Eavestroughs Working
Rain falls, and there’s nothing that can be done about that! But you can help prevent it from accumulating and making its way into your basement. Systems like eavestroughs and downspouts help direct rainfall and other moisture away from your home, but they must be properly installed and regularly maintained in order to work. Have your eavestroughs cleaned and inspected frequently to make sure there are no clogs.

2. Grade Your Property
Water will take the path of least resistance, so if your land is angled toward your house, rainfall and other moisture will pool at the foundation and make its way in. Land should angle away from the perimeter of your home.

3. Use Landscaping Rocks
Landscaping rocks or gravel around the outside of your home will help water move away from the structure of the building and stay outside, where it belongs.

4. Watch Out for Cracks
Foundation cracks are a frequent problem for homeowners and make a leaky basement far more likely to occur. These problem spots can be fixed from the inside or the outside but either way, you should bring in a professional to complete the repair.

5. Use a Dehumidifier
Basements are naturally humid — running a dehumidifier will keep excess moisture out of the air and make your basement feel drier..

6. Get Expert Help
If you are continually battling basement leaks, get professional help — the pros can get to the bottom of what is causing your moisture problem!
